Bradley Britigan, MD, named to LCME board

Bradley Britigan, MD,  dean of the UNMC College of Medicine, has been named to the Liaison Committee on Medical Education’s board.

The LCME is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education as the accrediting agency for medical education programs leading to the MD degree. It reviews 12 standards and 93 elements that a medical school must meet to receive accreditation.

During his three-year term as a member of the LCME board, which began this month, Dr. Britigan will participate in accreditation processes and other activities, including reviewing survey data and reports. He may participate in site visits to various institutions as part of the accreditation process. (This year, UNMC received an eight-year LCME re-accreditation.)

UNMC Chancellor Jeffrey P. Gold, MD, a former chair of the LCME board and the 2015 recipient of its Outstanding Service Award, congratulated Dr. Britigan on his appointment.

"The LCME is, in many ways, the guardian of both current medical education and its future," Dr. Gold said. "It’s ongoing impact on medical education across North America is immeasurable, and we look forward to seeing Dr. Britigan’s leadership brought to bear in service of medical education across the country."

Dr. Britigan said he was honored to be selected for the role.

"With UNMC having recently completed the LCME eight-year reaccreditation process, I have seen firsthand the commitment and care the organization brings to its mission," he said. "It’s humbling to know that I will have a role in ensuring that medical education in the United States and Canada will remain robust and effective, addressing new issues as they arise and holding to the high standards we expect of our medical institutions and educators."
