Fix is available if Zoom is crashing when screen sharing

Zoom has been crashing on some users and kicking people out of meetings when they access the screen share function. If that has been a problem, UNMC and Nebraska Medicine Information Technology has a fix.

Video operations worked with workstation support to deploy a fix in the software center.

The 32-bit version of the Zoom client is the root cause, and that has been the med center’s standard client deployment since it adopted Zoom. It was compatible with Internet Explorer browser at the time.

Today, Zoom’s 64-bit client is the standard and, based on IT’s testing, has resolved the issue. It integrates better with the newer browsers such as Microsoft Edge and Google Chrome.

If this is not an issue, no action is required.

To install the new 64-bit Zoom client, take these steps:

  • Type in “Software Center” in the Microsoft Search bar
  • Usually, the Software Center opens up with the “Applications” already highlighted in the left panel.
  • Look for Zoom on the right and click to launch.
  • Follow the instructions.
  • Recommended to reboot after installation.

For issues with the software center, contact the help desk or create a Service NOW incident to engage workstation support for assistance.

No advice for Apple users, however.

Since us Mac Users don’t use the Software Center, we can manually download Zoom upgrades by going to the
    Zoom Download Center at http://www.zoom.us/download.
Click on the large blue Download button for the 64-bit version of the Zoom Desktop Client.
