Bradley Britigan, MD, dean of the UNMC College of Medicine and the Stokes-Shackleford Professor, has announced the search committees for the next chairs of the UNMC Department of Anesthesiology and UNMC Department of Radiology.
In all, 40 individuals from across UNMC and Nebraska Medicine will participate in the search committees. David W. Mercer, MD, chair of the UNMC Department of Surgery, will lead the anesthesiology search committee, while Kevin Garvin, MD, chair of the UNMC Department of Orthopedics, will head the radiology search committee.
Said Dr. Britigan, “Selecting the right individuals to serve as the next chairs of the departments of anesthesiology and radiology is critical to the future success of the College of Medicine and our clinical partners. My thanks go out to Dr. Mercer and Dr. Garvin for agreeing to lead these search committees. I also want to thank the dozens of our med center faculty, staff and trainees who have agreed to give of their time to serve on them, as well as the others who offered their assistance.”
In anesthesiology, Steven Lisco, MD, served 11-plus years as chair of the department. He stepped away as chair in November to serve as Nebraska Medicine’s chief academic officer and the UNMC College of Medicine senior associate dean for clinical affairs.
In radiology, Craig Walker, MD, led the department for more than two decades before stepping down as chair effective in January, shifting his focus to clinical work and resident education.
Dr. Mercer said he is honored to be asked to serve as the chair of the anesthesiology search committee. He noted that he chaired the previous search committee that led to the naming of Dr. Lisco as chair.
“This position is crucial to our clinical and academic enterprise, which includes Nebraska Medicine, UNMC, Children’s Nebraska and other partners,” Dr. Mercer said. “While most appreciate their services in the procedural departments, they also provide important services in pain management and critical care, just to name few.
“The next leader will inherit a very successful department with unlimited potential, and I am excited to work with the search committee to assist the dean in this selection.”
Dr. Garvin said, “Dr. Walker has left the radiology department with an enduring legacy of leadership, and this search committee has an important task to find the next leader to move the department forward into the future. My thanks to Dr. Britigan for asking me to serve as chairman and for appointing this experienced committee to fulfill this task.”
