Meet the matches: Zach Walkenhorst

The UNMC 2024 Match Day celebration was held at the Scott Conference Center at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, where eight out of 140 medical students at UNMC opened their envelopes and found they had matched to the UNMC Department of Anesthesiology.

I chose the medical field because I had a significant injury during my first year of undergraduate studies and was in/out of the hospital and doctor’s office for several months. It was an important time for me and I wanted to make a similar impact on others as a doctor!

I felt like the fast-paced and quick decision-making nature of anesthesiology matched perfectly with my personality. The people in the specialty were all very welcoming and I decided that it was the best fit!

List 3 accomplishments you are proud of:

  2. While in medical school, I started a new organization in disc golf (something I really enjoy!) and was also the champion in intramural pickleball all four years!
  3. Lastly, I’m extremely proud of matching at UNMC in anesthesiology!

List 3 things people may not know about you:

  1. I was a collegiate pole vaulter at Northwest Missouri State.
  2. I’m also an avid disc golfer and racket sports player.
  3. I’m a big book reader as well as movie/tv watcher and usually am up to date on all the entertainment news!
