UNMC Connect magazine features a ‘kaleidoscope of care’

2025 UNMC Connect magazine

The 2025 spring edition of UNMC Connect – a publication for alumni and friends – is available online.

The cover feature, titled “Kaleidoscope of Care,” highlights an array of nurses with Nebraska connections making a difference in research, patient care, education and innovation. In their own words, the nurses – which includes the first female nurse to graduate Ranger School in 2024, a nurse scientist studying best ICU practices, nurse administrators and more – share the challenges, rewards and opportunities within the profession they love.

In this issue, Connect readers also will:

  • Meet a Navy veteran grateful for the care he’s received at the UNMC College of Dentistry, including services from the donor-funded UNMC VETSmile Dental Clinic, which serves eligible Nebraska veterans.
  • Learn what led Joann Sweasy, PhD, director of the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center, to a career in cancer research.
  • Discover how rheumatologist Kaleb Michaud, PhD, turned the pain of a childhood diagnosis into a purposeful career.
  • Be inspired by a Munroe-Meyer Institute employee who medaled at the 2025 Special Olympic World Games in cross-country skiing.

Additional highlights include a Q&A with the founding director of UNMC’s genetic counseling program, a 10-year reunion of the med center’s first Ebola patient and his caregivers, and how UNMC’s uBEATS modules are enhancing STEM education across the country.

UNMC Connect is published annually by UNMC’s Strategic Communications, UNMC Alumni Relations and the University of Nebraska Foundation.
