Meet our ‘new’ UNMC Graduate Studies staffers

UNMC Graduate Studies staffers Jamie Sorensen and Kayla Lorenzo

Let’s get to know our “new” UNMC Graduate Studies staffers, Kayla Lorenzo and Jamie Sorensen, a little better!

First, by alphabetical order, Kayla Lorenzo.

Job title: Graduate studies specialist – admissions.

Please tell us some of the things that you do as everyday duties:

My role is responsible for the review of admissions documents for all the incoming Graduate Studies students. After students are offered admission, I help coordinate their orientation and ensure they are prepared for a successful start in their program.

What are one or two things that you have done that are not “everyday duties” but that you have enjoyed (special circumstances, big projects, etc.):

I enjoy seeing familiar student faces at events around campus. It’s great to see the lifecycle of the student and particularly rewarding when you get to watch them graduate.

What do you want people to know when they come to you for help … or, what type of things should they come to you for?

The student perspective is important and when starting a new journey there can be so many questions. We want students to be comfortable whether you’re just starting the program or nearing the end. I primarily assist with admission related questions but I’m happy to help with anything else that pops up along the way.

What’s surprised you about working with UNMC Graduate Studies?

Most of my career has been in higher education and the biggest surprise has been all of the opportunities and events that happen across campus. Not just for students but for staff as well. It’s been a great atmosphere that feels full of growth and positivity.

Please list three things people may not know about you, or three “fun facts” about yourself:

· I lived in Italy for 3 years

· I traveled a lot while serving in the U.S. Navy

· Thrifting is my jam

Now let’s hear from Jamie Sorensen!

Job title: Graduate studies specialist.

Please tell us some of the things that you do as everyday duties:

I help students successfully progress through their program on Seguidor and help keep them on track up to graduation. I manage comprehensive and final oral exam requests and update the Graduate Studies website.

What are one or two things that you have done that are not “everyday duties” but that you have enjoyed (special circumstances, big projects, etc.):

I order personalized candidate jackets for students who passed their comprehensive exam. Passing the comprehensive exam is a big accomplishment for PhD students. I enjoy congratulating them with their hard work and welcoming them to their next step in their doctorate journey.

What do you want people to know when they come to you for help … or, what type of things should they come to you for?

I want students to know that even if I don’t have a solution to a problem, I will always try to find someone who can help! Students can come to me with questions about their program of study and Seguidor. We don’t do academic advising, but I can help students make sure that they are following graduate studies’ expectations and procedures. I want students to be prepared by understanding their catalog and timeline requirements.

What’s surprised you about working with UNMC Graduate Studies?

I was surprised by all the activities and social opportunities on campus! From lunch-and-learns to appreciation events, there are a lot of ways to explore and collaborate. I also enjoy the UNMC shuttle that helps make traveling on campus easier!

Please list three things people may not know about you, or three “fun facts” about yourself:

· I was born and raised in Omaha, but lived in a small town in Kansas for two years.

· I was a teacher for six years and have my Master of Science in Education.

· I love thrift shopping.
