UNMC and Nebraska Medicine Information Technology is using Windows Autopilot to streamline operations, ensure robust device security and provide seamless support across the organizations.
By moving UNMC and Nebraska Medicine computer deployments and device management to Windows Autopilot workflows, IT aims to simplify the process, make it more efficient and ensure that the devices are always up-to-date and secure.
Windows Autopilot allows IT to pre-configure device policies, which then are applied when people log into the device and ensure the computers are secure and ready for use right out of the box.
Here are some key benefits:
- Efficiency: Autopilot automates many of the time-consuming tasks traditionally associated with device deployment, freeing IT resources to focus on strategic initiatives.
- User experience: Users receive fully configured devices tailored to their role and specific needs, reducing downtime and increasing productivity.
- Delivery: Devices can be delivered to users directly out of the box, wherever they work.
- Security: Autopilot ensures devices are configured with the latest security protocols and software updates, providing defense against potential threats.
To make it as easy on users as possible, the Autopilot process is designed to be straightforward and seamless:
- Initial setup: Upon powering the device, users are guided through a simple setup process that connects them to the network and verifies their identity.
- Company portal: While key applications are preinstalled on the computer, such as Microsoft Office, other applications are available on the portal as a self-service installation. Users no longer need to call IT to install something. Simply search the portal and click “Install” as needed.
- Once the setup is complete, users have a fully customized and secure device ready for immediate use without the need for IT’s assistance.
Frequently asked questions
- What is the company portal? The company portal is an application that comes pre-installed on the computer that allows access to approved enterprise applications and automated security and configuration policies. IT uses the portal to keep devices updated, patched and secured on a continual basis.
- What about remote desktop access? Remote Desktop (RDP) into other workstations is being minimized across UNMC and Nebraska Medicine. Users on Autopilot devices cannot use RDP from one desktop to another desktop, such as remoting into their office computer from home. Users can use the UNMC or Nebraska Medicine AppStore to securely access applications from other devices.
- What if I use multiple devices? IT recommends using a laptop as the primary device for daily workflow flexibility. Colleagues can use multiple devices. But they will be unable to connect to other workstations via Remote Desktop. People will still be able to connect to servers and applications that require Remote Desktop. A mobile device, such as a mobile phone or iPad, can be a great complimentary device to help bridge that mobility gap.
