The UNMC Center for Healthy Living invites the campus to incorporate more activity into their daily routines by taking advantage of these fall events.

“Our events and programming are intended to build a culture of wellness on campus,” said Andrea Swett, director of the Center for Healthy Living. “We love to create opportunities for students and staff to be physically active throughout their education and work.”

New Thrive Wellness Challenge

The Thrive Steps & Stairs challenge begins Sept. 8, offering a progressive mix of walking intensities and exercise time paired with stair steps throughout the six-week challenge. The program is free and open to members of the UNMC and Nebraska Medicine community, which includes students and employees, as well as members of the Center for Healthy Living. Participants do not need to be members to join the challenge.

Registration for the challenge is available on the Center for Healthy Living website. After signing up, participants can download the activity plan tracker. At the end of the challenge, participants can submit their tracker to the Center for Healthy Living via email to receive a prize.

This challenge is part of a series of Thrive wellness events planned for the academic year. Last year, more than 500 participants joined in the programs throughout the year.

New fitness classes begin Sept. 2

Center for Healthy Living membership includes group fitness classes. The center offers several types of yoga classes, a variety of conditioning and toning classes, and high intensity training options. New this fall are MixxedFit dance and body toning, Warrior Workouts full-body conditioning and Barbell Strength lifting. The complete lineup of fitness classes, including times and descriptions, can be found online.

Classes are free to students who pay Fund B and Center for Healthy Living members.

Small group training now available

The Center for Healthy Living will offer six-week small group personal training sessions Sept. 8 through Oct. 17. This program is designed to provide participants with a focused, motivating and supportive environment to improve their fitness. Each session incorporates specialized gym equipment, such as battle ropes, sleds, rowers, fan bikes and more. The program is open to all fitness levels, with modifications and progressions for individual needs.

Those interested can sign up as an individual or with friends. Fee information and training times are on the Center for Healthy Living website. Email the Center for Healthy Living with questions.

Fitness certification opportunity

The Center for Healthy Living will host a group fitness instructor training session Sept. 13-14. Participants can choose whether to get certified to teach Les Mills Tone or Les Mills BodyCombat. The cost is $349. The training sessions are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Email the Center for Healthy Living for information about waiving the registration fee. Registration is open through Aug. 28 on the brand website for the Tone training and the Bodycombat training.

The Center for Healthy Living hopes the training sessions will serve as a pipeline for new instructors to teach fitness classes at the facility. The MixxedFit group fitness class that will be offered this fall is the result of a previous training certification opportunity at the center.
