‘After Covid’ author to speak at UNMC

Jason Gale, author of "After Covid: The Health Impacts That Will Last Generations"

The UNMC Global Center for Health Security will host award-winning journalist Jason Gale, the author of “After Covid: The Health Impacts That Will Last Generations,” for a discussion on the Omaha campus Wednesday, March 18.

Gale, a veteran of more than 25 years at Bloomberg News who serves as senior editor, focuses on infectious diseases and global health issues after first covering medical science with the 2005 H5N1 avian influenza outbreak. “After Covid” is his first book.

Gale will give a presentation titled “Pandemic Aftermath: System Fragility and the Next Health Security Threat.” It will be held in Williams Science Hall, Room 1.0.009, from 4:30-5:30 p.m. The event is open to the med center community; no registration is required. Watch the event virtually through the streaming link on this campus event listing.

He will examine how issues such as long-term morbidity, disrupted care, workforce attrition and declining trust are reshaping preparedness, and why those aftershocks may define the next crisis more than the pathogen itself.

Following Gale’s presentation, a panel discussion involving UNMC health security experts will delve into the issues he raises.

Panelists are:

  • Abbey Lowe, PhD, associate professor in the UNMC College of Public Health and a scholar with the Global Center for Health Security.
  • Nada Fadul, MD, professor in the UNMC College of Medicine, Division of Infectious Diseases.
  • James Lawler, MD, Woody and Paula Varner Professor in the UNMC Division of Infectious Diseases and the Global Center for Health Security’s associate director for international programs and innovation.

Dr. Lawler said, “This will be a great opportunity for faculty and staff to hear from an acknowledged thought leader in health security and also to highlight GCHS and the university’s role on the world stage in this space.”
