Interim Chancellor H. Dele Davies, MD, priority candidate for the position of chancellor of UNMC, will begin a series of visits with university leadership, faculty, staff, students, donors and community members beginning today (May 20).
Dr. Davies, who has served as interim chancellor since 2024, was named the priority candidate for UNMC chancellor May 1 after a search process that was open to candidates across the University of Nebraska System.
As part of the 30-day public vetting process, Dr. Davies will visit with UNMC faculty, staff and students in Kearney, Omaha, Lincoln, Norfolk and Scottsbluff, as well as meet with key stakeholders in each community.
“During his 14 years at UNMC, Dr. Davies has demonstrated a deep commitment to students, patients and communities across Nebraska,” said NU President Jeffery P. Gold, MD. “I’m excited for members of our university community to have the chance to meet with Dr. Davies and hear his vision for the future of UNMC and the statewide care it supports.”

As UNMC’s interim chancellor, Dr. Davies oversees campus leadership, program quality and campus operations, which include six colleges, a graduate studies program, two degree-granting institutes, more than 6,000 professional faculty and staff, and 4,500 health professions students.
He joined UNMC as vice chancellor and dean of graduate studies in 2012. He was promoted in 2017 to senior vice chancellor, with expanded responsibilities and direct oversight of all UNMC colleges and a health sciences library. During his tenure at Nebraska, Dr. Davies has overseen numerous initiatives and helped grow UNMC’s rural health programs, pathway programs, community outreach and faculty and staff development. He also has been instrumental in the development of multiple new professional degree programs, which in turn have contributed to the steady enrollment growth UNMC has experienced over the past decade.
The NU Board of Regents could vote to approve the new UNMC chancellor as soon as their June 18 meeting. If confirmed as permanent chancellor, Dr. Davies would succeed Dr. Gold, who served as UNMC chancellor for a decade prior to being named the University of Nebraska System president.
