Bridget Hamill, PhD, was named the director of the Office of Graduate Studies, effective July 6. A self-described systems builder, Dr. Hamill brings a strong blend of experience in higher education, research and data analytics to her new role.
Originally from rural New York, she has lived in Omaha the past five years. Prior to joining UNMC, Dr. Hamill led data analysis and assessment initiatives at the American Chemical Society and previously worked as a graduate admissions counselor, helping students navigate the graduate school application process. Dr. Hamill earned a bachelor’s degree in economics from St. Lawrence University, a master’s degree in higher education from Teacher’s College at Columbia University and a PhD in higher education from Virginia Tech.
Dr. Hamill plans to serve as a friendly, supportive resource for graduate students while evaluating administrative processes to make them more accessible and efficient. One initiative she plans to kick off right way is offering virtual evening office hours for students not able to visit during the workday.
“Our goal is to continue supporting graduate students, faculty and academic programs by streamlining administrative processes and ensuring our services remain effective, accessible and student-centered,” she said.
Dr. Hamill said her years in higher ed administration, combined with her own experience earning a PhD while raising a family, give her a unique perspective on the challenges graduate students face. “Having gone through the process of earning a PhD while balancing family life gave me firsthand experience of the graduate student journey, along with a strong understanding of the support students need to succeed.”

Dr. Hamill describes academia as her “happy place” and is eager to help UNMC students reach their goals. “I want to hear what students are learning and working on. The research our students are doing is amazing, cutting-edge work, and it’s exciting to see how it will help shape the future of science, medicine and health care.”
