On Sept. 29, faculty mentors from UNMC’s Academic Affairs Mentoring program and faculty coaches from UNMC Faculty Development’s Creative Coaching Program were recognized for their commitment to developing the talent and shaping the culture at UNMC.
At the event, Chancellor H. Dele Davies, MD, reflected on the people who helped shape his own path. Mentors and coaches saw strengths and possibilities he could not yet see in himself, and offered a powerful message through their words and support: “I see in you…”
These four words capture what meaningful developmental relationships can do. Mentoring and coaching are distinct approaches that help faculty grow and develop, said Jane Meza, PhD, interim vice chancellor of academic affairs.
“A mentor may share perspective, experience and guidance drawn from a journey similar to the one ahead,” Dr. Meza said. “A coach creates space for reflection, asks questions that deepen insight and helps an individual identify the next step that is right for them. Both can help faculty recognize their potential, navigate challenges with greater clarity and move forward with purpose.
“UNMC’s faculty coaching and mentoring programs create opportunities for faculty to build these valuable connections across the institution,” she said. “Whether someone is exploring a new goal, stepping into leadership, working through a transition or looking for a trusted sounding board, coaching and/or mentoring can provide encouragement, accountability and a broader view of what is possible.”
Faculty members are invited to learn more about participating in UNMC’s Coaching and Mentoring programs—as a participant, a coach or a mentor. One conversation may be all it takes to help someone hear, perhaps for the first time, “I see in you…”
