Dr. Mohring named chief of general internal medicine

Stephen Mohring, MD

Stephen Mohring, MD, associate professor of medicine, has been named the next chief of the UNMC Division of General Internal Medicine.

Hemant Roy, MD, chair of the UNMC Department of Internal Medicine, announced the leadership change, which will be effective Nov. 1.

“He is a remarkably talented and dynamic physician and will build on the outstanding leadership of this division,” Dr. Roy said.

Jennifer Parker, MD, who has led the division since September 2021, said Dr. Mohring is a respected leader at UNMC and Nebraska Medicine.

“His leadership is grounded in service,” said Dr. Parker, who will continue as a physician-educator and associate professor in the division. “He understands that the strength of our division comes from the talents, dedication and diversity of the people in it. He values collaboration, supports innovation and consistently focuses on helping others succeed.”

Dr. Mohring said he is humbled and thrilled by the appointment, noting that he is following in the footsteps of two of his mentors and former division chiefs, Dr. Parker and Thomas Tape, MD, who was division chief from 2002 until his retirement in 2021.

“I’m excited to lead, as our division is thriving, with proven excellence in clinical care and teaching,” Dr. Mohring said. “The most important thing I can do as division chief is support my colleagues. We have a diverse array of faculty interests, and I’m going to do everything I can to support their work in education, teaching and research.”

UNMC Chancellor H. Dele Davies, MD, said this new role is well-deserved and recognized Dr. Mohring’s “steady, thoughtful leadership.”

“He understands primary care not only as a physician, but as an educator and leader who has spent years working to improve care for patients and the people who provide it,” Dr. Davies said. “He also brings to this role something that cannot be learned quickly: a deep understanding of this organization, its people and the important role general internal medicine plays in fulfilling our mission.”

Dr. Mohring joined UNMC as an internal medicine faculty member in 2015 after completing medical school and residency training at UNMC. He has led Nebraska Medicine’s patient-centered medical home accreditation efforts for the past decade, ensuring all primary care clinics meet Joint Commission standards.

“Throughout his career, Dr. Mohring has demonstrated a remarkable commitment to patient care, education, innovation and service,” Dr. Parker said. “He has helped shape how we deliver care, improve outcomes and meet the evolving needs of our patients and communities.”

He also has taken on increasingly significant Nebraska Medicine leadership roles, including senior medical director for population health and medical director of the general internal medicine clinic at the Durham Outpatient Center. His clinical and leadership interests also include diabetes care and prevention in rural Nebraska and teaching medical students and residents.

“There has never been a more important time for the role of primary care providers,” Dr. Mohring said. “In the age of AI, changing guidelines, advanced therapeutics and subspecialty care, the general internist plays a unique and important role in navigating all of this. The patient-PCP relationship has never been more crucial. Likewise, we take our role of educating students and residents very seriously.”

Dr. Mohring has received multiple awards, including repeated recognition as a Top Teacher in Internal Medicine and the 2022 Innovator Award from the Nebraska Health Network. He also is a member of the Society for General Internal Medicine and a fellow in the American College of Physicians, serving on its national Medical Practice and Quality Committee. His clinical interests include preventive care, wellness visits and management of chronic diseases.

“His dedication to education extends from clinical teaching to mentorship and demonstrates a commitment to developing future physicians,” Dr. Parker said. “As I transition this role, I do so with tremendous confidence and optimism. I know that our division will continue to grow, evolve and thrive.”
