HR to offer communications skills courses

Four UNMC Communications Skills Courses, presented by UNMC Human Resources, will be offered over the coming months.

There is no charge for these courses, but the department account will be assessed a fee for no shows and dropping a class. As class sizes are small, priority will be given to those who will attend all sessions; call (402) 559-5916 if you must miss a session.

The courses include:

“Cooperation, Collaboration and Communication: How to Build Productive Work Relationships,” Wednesday, May 21, UNMC College of Nursing, Room 2018. The instructor is Capiz Greene of Greenlite Productions. The class size is limited to 25 participants.
This course will give participants a common language that will make them better communicators by significantly increasing their understanding of why people do what they do. They’ll learn the specific communication needs that every individual has, and how to “flex their style” to meet those needs when delivering a message of persuasion and empowerment.
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:


  • Get everyone on the same page, moving in the same direction today.
  • Know his/her own personal behavioral style, its strengths and challenges.
  • Identify five ways they can be more flexible and adaptable to others’ differences.
  • Discover four ways to create motivational environments for others.
  • Establish an action plan to better communicate their message.
  • Review 3 key strategies for identifying conflict potential and minimizing it.
  • Demonstrate his/her own personal strength in leading and persuading others.

“Command Spanish for Healthcare Professionals,” on Tuesdays from June 10 through July 8, UNMC College of Nursing, Room 2018. The instructor is Melanie Lewandowski of Metro Community College. The course is open to UNMC, UMA and NHS employees. They must call 559-5916 for payment details. It is limited to 25 direct care providers.
This five-session non-credit course is presented through Metropolitan Community College’s Workforce Development Institute. Command Spanish is the nation’s leading provider of customized Spanish-language instructional programs for professionals. Command Spanish provides immediate application of practical Spanish that is occupation specific, using language materials and workshops that require no prior knowledge of Spanish. Included in the program are a participant manual and audio tapes.
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:


  • Learn and use language components as greetings, etiquette, appointments and instructions.
  • Identify and use key phrases specific to healthcare settings.
  • Use Real Spanish for Real People including questions and instructions for diagnosis and procedures.

“Business Writing,” from 9:30-11:30 a.m. on Tuesdays from June 10 through Aug. 12, UNMC College of Nursing, Room 2018. The instructor is Steve Lovett from Metro Community College. The course is open to UNMC employees, but is limited to 20 participants.
The ten-session, non-credit course is presented through Metropolitan Community College’s Workforce Development Institute. Included in the program are all instructional materials. Participants will be expected to complete writing assignments outside of the class time.
The course will cover aspects of business communications, including:


  • Producing effective e-mail, letters, memos, and reports
  • Understanding characteristics of good business writing.
  • Developing efficient sentences and paragraphs, for effective writing.
  • Avoiding common grammatical errors.
  • Using words for maximum effect.

“English as a Second Language,” from 5-7 p.m. on Thursdays from June 12 through Aug. 14, UNMC College of Nursing, Room 2002. The instructor is Melanie Lewandowski from Metro Community College. It is open to UNMC employees, but is limited to 20 participants
This is a ten-session, non-credit course. ESL provides individuals with limited English proficiency with the opportunity to learn to distinguish sounds aurally and to produce those sounds orally. The participant improves his/her listening abilities to better understand speech of native speakers by studying common speech reductions. The participant improves his/her own speech by learning the components of the English sound system as well as the stress, rhythm, and intonation patterns of English speech.
