The Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center is hosting the exhibition “Jun Kaneko: Color and Line” through Sept. 21 in the gallery space on level one of the center.

Known for his large-scale hand built clay sculptures that push the limits of ceramics, Kaneko is an internationally renowned artist who is highly respected in both the contemporary art and ceramic fields. The exhibition features 19 artworks by Kaneko, including drawings, paintings, wall slabs and sculpture.

“Jun Kaneko covers the surface of his works with painterly lines and astonishing colors,” said Colleen Heavican, Healing Arts Curator at UNMC. “The playful patterns and colors brighten the heart, leaving an impression of unbounded optimism.”

Born in Nagoya, Japan in 1942, Kaneko came to the United States in 1963 and became drawn to sculptural ceramics. He has lived and worked in Omaha since 1986.

The works in this exhibition focus on Kaneko’s use of line and color, and his unique visual language of stripes, dots, spirals and squares. Kaneko also is the artist of the SEARCH Tower, located outside the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center.

Kaneko’s emphasis on color is exemplified in SEARCH, as its design incorporates pattern, light and color to bring positive energy, hope and inspiration to the patients, families and professionals at the cancer center.

“Jun Kaneko: Line and Color” is a free exhibition on view during regular visiting hours, 8 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.

The exhibition also will be included in docent-guided Healing Arts tours. Docent-led art tours are offered on a first-come, first-served basis for 15 people from 1 to 2 p.m. on Saturdays. Individuals can sign up for tours online here.
