Fisher named to assistant program director in MMI genetic counseling program

Fisher started her career as a cytogenetic technologist in the Human Genetics Laboratory before earning her master’s degree in medical genetics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. In 2004, Fisher returned to MMI and joined the genetic medicine department as a genetic counselor. She currently provides prenatal genetic counseling at the Olson Center for Women’s Health at Nebraska Medicine and is well known for the level of care she provides. In addition to providing patient care, Fisher has volunteered her time for program planning and has been an active member of each committee she joins.
Emerging Professionals Program seeks volunteers
The Emerging Professionals Program (EPP) is seeking volunteers for the Fall 2018 Volunteer Day from 8:30-11:30 a.m. on Oct. 6. EPP members will meet for a light breakfast and orientation at The Food Bank for the Heartland, 10525 J St., Omaha, before volunteering with the organization. Volunteer registration deadline is Oct. 1; register here. The event is for EPP members only, but those interested in volunteering can join EPP here. Several UNMC house officers recently participated in the Omaha Marathon as part of the UNMC House Officer Association (HOA) “Fitness in Training” crew. The group’s goal is to reduce resident burnout, as well as promote resident health and fitness via participation in local events.

Symposium to highlight state-of-the-art cardiovascular research
The Editors of the American Journal of Physiology-Heart and Circulatory Physiology invite all interested faculty and students to attend a daylong symposium highlighting state-of-the-art research carried out by a group of world-class cardiovascular physiologists. The symposium, held from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Oct. 2 at the Sorrell Center, is free of charge. A workshop focusing on publication ethics, social media in publishing and rigor and reproducibility issues will be held beginning at 4 p.m.

Weigel Williamson Center open house set for today
The Weigel Williamson Center for Visual Rehabilitation is celebrating 10 years with an open house from 2 to 5 p.m. today at the low vision center located at 704 S. 38th Ave. on the eastern edge of the UNMC campus.
Join John Shepherd, M.D., director of the center and his staff for light refreshments and tour the facility to learn more about the services they provide. Dr. Shepherd will make brief remarks at 4 p.m.
UNO to host a graduate school expo on Oct. 10
University of Nebraska at Omaha Graduate Studies is hosting a Graduate School Expo on Wednesday, Oct. 10, from 3-6 p.m., in the Barbara Weitz Community Engagement Center on the UNO Dodge Street campus.
Attendees will have the opportunity to speak with representatives from more than 70 graduate programs at the certificate, master’s, and Ph.D. levels about finding the right program, application processes, and preparing for the next step in furthering a professional career. Register here.
