The medical center’s hot research featured in latest UNMC Discover

Meet Alexander “Sasha” Kabanov, Ph.D., D.Sc., in a more personal way in the new issue of UNMC Discover, which features some of the hottest research underway at the medical center.

picture disc.In the May edition, now online, readers will find an in-depth story about Dr. Kabanov, UNMC’s fourth Scientist Laureate.

Dr. Kabanov is one of the world’s leaders in the field of polymers, micelles and nanogels — tiny particles that can deliver drugs across the blood brain barrier and target cancer cells.

The spring 2010 edition also highlights:

  • Ali Nawshad, D.D.S., Ph.D., who has made it a mission to eliminate cleft lip and palate;
  • How a UNMC physician and a researcher are poised to slow the growth of aortic aneurysms and eliminate the need for surgery;
  • Researchers who were honored this spring as 2010 Distinguished Scientists;
  • Howard Gendelman, M.D., and his research that gives hope to people with Parkinson’s disease;
  • Efforts by Ayman El-Mohandes, M.B.B.Ch, M.D., M.P.H., to reduce health disparities in high-risk patients;
  • How cardiac patients and their spouses stick to an exercise program when they team up;
  • What happens when a chemical engineer and an infectious disease physician collaborate to diagnose tuberculosis;
  • How sex research will move into the Omaha community to find answers to public health issues; and;
  • How a space-age treadmill is helping patients with cerebral palsy walk.

Web extras — including one that tests readers’ science literacy on sex — accompany some of the stories and provide an opportunity to learn more about certain research.

The magazine — published twice a year by the departments of public relations, the vice chancellor for research and the chancellor’s office — also features an opportunity to learn more about the Metro Credit Union.
