Nearly 50 undergraduates from the University of Nebraska at Omaha, University of Nebraska-Lincoln and University of Nebraska at Kearney gathered last week at UNMC for the second annual Scholars Day.

“This is a great opportunity for students,” said Corrine Kliment, a junior at UNL, who attended Friday’s event. “A lot of students need these types of opportunities to learn and explore possible careers.”

The students spent part of their Spring Break learning more about brain tumors, drug delivery systems, exercise and chronic diseases and robotic surgery. Other sessions covered such topics as cardiovascular ultrasound, radiation sciences, dental updates and research.

“The goal of Scholars Day is to inform science-minded students of the technical and scientific advances on campus,” said Sharon Palmer of UNMC’s Office of Student Equity and Multicultural Affairs, which sponsored the event.

For the past two summers, Kliment has participated in UNMC’s undergraduate research program in internal medicine-pulmonology. The Lincoln native is interested in UNMC’s M.D., Ph.D., program.

For Tasha Johnson of Holdrege, Scholars Day was an opportunity to visit the UNMC campus and learn more about its diverse offerings. The UNK senior hopes to eventually enroll in UNMC’s College of Pharmacy.

For UNL senior Timothy Niessen, it was his first visit to UNMC. The Oxford, Pa., native, who is planning a career in primary care, said he was exploring his medical school options.

UNO junior Ben Lamberty, who also is interested in a health-career, decided to spend Friday learning about the various facets of the medical center.
