New faculty spotlight: Sam Brown, MD

Sam Brown, MD

Sam Brown, MD, is a new faculty member at UNMC.

  • Name: Sam Brown, MD
  • Current positions at UNMC and Nebraska Medicine: Assistant professor, UNMC Department of Surgery, Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery; cardiothoracic surgeon, Nebraska Medicine
  • Hometown: Bowling Green, Kentucky

Education:

  • Medical school at the University of Kentucky College of Medicine
  • Residency in general surgery at Creighton University School of Medicine
  • Fellowship in cardiothoracic surgery at Loma Linda University School of Medicine

Professional and medical interests:

  • Coronary artery disease
  • Valve repair and replacement
  • Aortic surgery
  • Heart failure and heart transplant

How I fell in love with my specialty: I shadowed a pediatric surgeon in college and loved it. I thought surgery was the coolest thing in the world. After that, I matched into general surgery and ultimately went into cardiac surgery. Cardiac surgery is a very detail-oriented field with fine vascular sewing, which I really enjoy. Cardiac anatomy and heart operations also are beautiful. I like that it is a reconstructive specialty. I also enjoy the critical care and physiology involved in patients’ post-op care.

Three things people may not know about me:

  • I enjoy running.
  • I like playing board and card games.
  • I enjoy spending time with my wife and our 7-pound toy poodle.

Clinic location: Heart and Vascular Center at Durham Outpatient Center

For appointments and referrals: 402-559-4424

Dr. Brown, This is Pat El Tuhami, the wife of Hashim El Tuhami. I want to tell you how thankful I am to you for everything you did for Hashim. You showed him so much respect and kindness. It didn’t end up as we had hoped, but I know that you did everything in your power to save him. UNMC is very fortunate to have you. Thank you again, Pat El Tuhami.
