91 UNMC faculty members recognized for service milestones

The UNMC Faculty Senate recognized 91 faculty members who are celebrating 10, 20, 30 and 40 years of service this year.

Three of those were specially honored for 40 years of service.

UNMC College of Medicine

Carol Casey, PhD

Bradley Britigan, MD, dean of the UNMC College of Medicine, said Dr. Casey joined UNMC’s internal medicine department in 1984 as an assistant professor with a courtesy appointment in biochemistry. “Over her 40 years at UNMC, she has been a mainstay of the alcohol research unit, primarily based at the VA,” Dr. Britigan said.

Byers Shaw Jr., MD

Dr. Britigan said Dr. Shaw was recruited in 1985 to UNMC to develop a liver transplant program, which he built into one of the country’s strongest. Since stepping away from clinical medicine, Dr. Shaw now contributes to medicine through his skills in communications and the humanities, and teaching medical students is his passion, Dr. Britigan said.

John Windle, MD

A UNMC College of Medicine alum, Dr. Windle returned to UNMC as a faculty member and established the first cardiac electrophysiology program in Nebraska, Dr. Britigan said. He currently serves as the inaugural director of the Center for Intelligent Health Care at UNMC.

Five faculty members have completed 30 years of service.
