This profile is part of a series to highlight the researchers and leaders who will be honored at a ceremony on Nov. 6 for UNMC’s annual research awards – the prestigious Scientist Laureate Award and the Research Leadership, Distinguished Scientist, New Investigator, Career Achievement and Community Service to Research Awards.

Distinguished Scientist

Distinguished Scientist Awards, which are sponsored by the chancellor, recognize researchers who have been among the most productive scientists at UNMC during the past five years.

  • Name: Bin Duan, PhD
  • Title: Associate professor, Division of Cardiovascular Medicine, Department of Internal Medicine, UNMC College of Medicine
  • Joined UNMC: November 2015
  • Hometown: Shenyang, China

Describe your research focus in three words or less:

Biomaterials, drug delivery, tissue regeneration

Why is research important in the world today?

Research drives innovation, improves health care and addresses global challenges. Through research, we can develop better therapies, materials and technologies that prevent disease, improve health outcomes and enhance quality of life. In a rapidly changing world, research can inform public policy, provide practical solutions and help communities make decisions using evidence-based approaches.

My research will make a difference because:

Tissue regeneration is a major challenge in medicine. My work focuses on developing biomaterials, engineered scaffolds and drug delivery systems that enhance tissue repair by combining innovative materials with targeted therapeutic delivery. These strategies can accelerate healing, restore function and reduce complications in patients. By bridging engineering and biology, my research has the potential to transform regenerative therapies and improve outcomes for patients with injuries or chronic diseases.

The best advice I’ve ever received is:

Stay curious, explore broadly and decide wisely.

Three things you may not know about me are:

  • I love playing soccer and have represented my department and college teams.
  • I love traveling with my family and collecting magnets.
  • I am a big fan of Keigo Higashino, a renowned Japanese mystery novelist.
