Strength training is a powerful tool for lifelong mobility, independence and overall health.

The UNMC Center for Healthy Living will put the focus on the topic of age-related muscle loss and the benefits strength training with the upcoming four-week seminar “Lifting for Longevity.” The seminar is designed to teach foundational lifting skills, proper movement mechanics and safe, sustainable strength-building habits.

“Whether you’re seeking better mobility, more energy, improved confidence or a healthier aging process, Lifting for Longevity offers a pathway to lasting strength — no matter your age or experience level,” said Andrea Swett, manager of the Center for Healthy Living.

The seminar will run March 9 through April 1 on Mondays and Wednesdays at the Center for Healthy Living. It is open to anyone on the med center campus, and participants do not need to be a member of the Center for Healthy Living. Limited spots are available.

Deanna Hexum, 84, a Center for Healthy Living member, said strength training has become a constant in her weekly routine – and has produced meaningful changes.

“Everyday movements became smoother,” she said, “Walking the golf course — even with hills — felt easier and more enjoyable.” After breaking her arm last year, she could immediately tell the difference between lifting and not lifting. Strength training also helps ease her arthritis and keeps her joints feeling loose.

Pat Wortmann, 59, another Center for Healthy Living member, said he relies on resistance training for mobility, health and weight management. He said he also has been surprised how aerobic weight lifting can be.

Wortmann said strength impacts every part of his daily life. Tasks like climbing stairs, carrying groceries and maintaining energy all feel easier when he’s training consistently.

“Lifting for Longevity” offers the UNMC and Nebraska Medicine communities accessible training, supportive instruction and the foundational skills needed to become stronger for the long term. Sign up for the Lifting for Longevity Seminar at this link.
