Hwi Young Kim, MD, PhD, is a new faculty member at UNMC.

  • Name: Hwi Young Kim MD, PhD
  • Current title at UNMC and Nebraska Medicine: Professor, UNMC Department of Internal Medicine, Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology; gastroenterologist and hepatologist, Nebraska Medicine
  • Hometown: Seoul, South Korea

Education:

  • Medical school at Seoul National University

Medical interests: I enjoy hepatology because it requires a holistic approach, not just medications and procedures, but also lifestyle modification and long-term follow-up. I see patients with a wide range of liver conditions, such as viral hepatitis, autoimmune liver disease, cirrhosis and end-stage liver disease. Of these, I have a special interest in steatotic liver disease, formerly known as fatty liver disease, including both metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease and alcohol-related liver disease.

How I fell in love with medicine and my specialty: I was drawn to the problem-solving nature of medicine during medical school. As a physician-scientist, I found it fascinating to integrate clinical reasoning and evidence-based practice, then derive research questions based on the insights from patient care.

Professional memberships:

  • American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases
  • European Association for the Study of the Liver
  • Korean Association for the Study of the Liver

Three things people may not know about me:

  • I play tennis on weekends.
  • I love to travel whenever I get the chance.
  • I used to go hiking from time to time when I lived in Seoul.

Clinical location:

  • Internal Medicine Specialties at Durham Outpatient Center

For appointments and referrals: 402-559-4015
