Earth Month events at UNMC aim for a healthier tomorrow

Neelanjana Gayen, a UNMC PhD student in biochemistry and molecular biology and president of UNMC’s Health Educators and Academic Leaders (HEAL) organization, helped planted a tree in the green space in front of the Durham Research Center last October at an event with UNMC grounds staff and the LiveGreen Ambassadors organization.

Earth Month in April is about celebrating the planet and the people who care for it. This year’s Earth Month theme, “A Climate of Hope: Connecting People and Planet for a Healthier Tomorrow,” reminds everyone that small actions add up to something big.

Throughout April, the UNMC Office of Sustainability and several other groups across campus have lined up ways to get involved in creating a healthier tomorrow.

Check out the major events below. For a full list of events throughout Earth Month, visit the 2026 Earth Month page on the sustainability office website.

  • E-waste recycling event: Dispose of items from old electronics and batteries to eye glasses and paper at the annual event. The event will be held Tuesday, April 14, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Wednesday, April 15, from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the UNMC Grounds Building (Annex 23) in Lot 17, 4650 Jones St.
  • Tree planting: Celebrate the med center’s Tree Campus USA recertification and support the campus canopy by planting a tree, learning from a local arborist and having a snack. The ceremony is April 24 from noon to 1 p.m. north of the Lozier Center for Pharmacy Sciences and Education in the Ruth & Bill Scott Student Plaza.
  • Health Care EcoChallenge: Participants can join this monthlong digital challenge to track sustainable habits, such as reducing waste and preparing plant-based meals, and see their actions add up for a chance to win a prize.
