UNMC was recognized by the National Safety Council-Nebraska Chapter as one of Nebraska’s safest companies, marking the 17th consecutive year it has earned the award.
UNMC is 45% lower than the national average for incident rates in colleges, universities and professional schools. From 2024 to 2025, OSHA recordable incidents decreased by 17.5%
Kelly Johnson, environmental compliance and safety specialist with UNMC Environmental Health and Safety, said being recognized as one of Nebraska’s safest companies is the result of strong collaboration across the environmental health and safety team.

Johnson said environmental health and safety investigates incidents, identifies root causes and creates educational and training resources that enhance safety for faculty, staff, students, patients and visitors. The work is supported, she said, through a close partnership with UNMC Safety Leadership members and Employee Safety Committee members.
“We thank our faculty, staff and students for the vital role they play in keeping our campus safe by making safety a priority in their daily work and responsibilities,” Johnson said.
The National Safety Council-Nebraska Chapter hosted their annual Celebration of Safety luncheon May 5 to recognize 132 companies as Nebraska’s safest companies.
Eric Koeppe, president and CEO of the National Safety Council-Nebraska Chapter, said: “Winning a Nebraska’s Safest Company Award clearly illustrates a company’s commitment to ensuring that their team members return home safely to their families at the end of each workday. The Celebration of Safety honors the Nebraska organizations that have achieved excellence in safety this past year, and we are proud to recognize their achievements in providing a safer Nebraska.”
To support UNMC’s ongoing commitment to a safe campus environment, the med center community is urged to follow the established incident reporting guidelines.
