UNMC’s iEXCEL program has been reaccredited for five years as an American College of Surgeons Comprehensive Accredited Education Institute, reaffirming the program’s position as a national leader in interprofessional simulation-based education and training.
The ACS–AEI designation recognizes institutions that effectively address the educational needs of a broad spectrum of health professions learners while advancing the science and practice of simulation-based education.
The distinction reflects the continued excellence of both iEXCEL and UNMC departments in delivering innovative, high-quality educational experiences that enhance clinical competency and patient care.
Pamela Boyers, PhD, UNMC’s associate vice chancellor for iEXCEL, said it demonstrates the “exceptional dedication, professionalism and collaborative spirit exhibited by the entire iEXCEL team who, with innovative faculty and students, continuously explore new ways of teaching and learning.
“Achieving ACS–AEI accreditation requires not only excellence in educational programming and simulation operations but requires an extraordinary level of preparation and organization,” Dr. Boyers said.
She cited the tremendous effort that went into leading, compiling, organizing and presenting the documentation required throughout the reaccreditation process. Dr. Boyers also recognized: Ben Stobbe, assistant vice chancellor for advanced and statewide simulation, iEXCEL; Chandra Are, MBBS, vice chair of education with the UNMC Department of Surgery; Christie Barnes, MD, director of resident education with the UNMC Department of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery; Jenni Bouckhuyt, associate executive director for simulation operations; and Liz Svoboda, PhD, educational outcomes specialist.
Established by the American College of Surgeons’ Division of Education, the AEI Consortium includes 86 comprehensive and 13 focused institutions across the United States and internationally.
Achieving ACS-AEI accreditation requires a rigorous two-stage review process. Institutions must first undergo an evaluation conducted by experienced reviewers with expertise in simulation and skills-based education. Accreditation is awarded only after comprehensive assessment of compliance across a series of criteria and standards.
The ACS site reviewer praised UNMC for iEXCEL’s facilities, leadership and commitment to educational excellence, highlighting its “exceptional simulation center with extensive high-tech equipment.” The site reviewer noted: “The center excels in governance and assessment practices, with practices that align with accreditation standards. It is well-positioned for continued development as a Comprehensive Education Institute.”
