Dentistry to provide dental care to 125 underserved kids

The UNMC College of Dentistry in Lincoln will host Children’s Dental Day Thursday, Nov. 14, providing free dental care and education to 125 underserved children from Norfolk and Fremont.

Russian nurses learn about American health care

Though separated a world apart in terms of distance, culture and health care systems, the love of nursing recently brought together American and Russian nurse leaders who forged an instant bond.

The UNMC College of Nursing hosted an educational visit of eight Russian nurse leaders Oct. 17-22, in an effort to show their colleagues how health policy efforts can improve the health of their communities. The visiting Russian women were chief nursing officers, managers and professors.

CON to host Russian nurse managers Oct. 16-23

Eight Russian nurse leaders will spend almost a week in Nebraska as part of the Open World Program of the Center for Russian Leadership Development at the United States Library of Congress. The nurses will learn how nursing and civic organizations can work together to improve health policy.

COD museum boasts largest collection of Midwest dental artifacts

The UNMC College of Dentistry in Lincoln invites the public to its free, annual opening of its Dental Museum, Oct. 7-12, during which the museum puts its entire collection on display. The museum has one of the largest regional collections of historical dental equipment and artifacts dating from the 1850s.

UNMC’s College of Nursing and Nebraska Health System will host Lois Evans, D.N.Sc., as its Visiting Nurse Scholar, Oct. 14 and 15. Dr. Evans, Viola MacInnes/Independence Professor in Nursing at the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing, is one of the nation’s foremost researchers in the care of the elderly.

British family returns home after daughter’s rare brain surgery

A British family who traveled to Omaha with the hopes that a skilled neurosurgeon’s hands would help their daughter returned to England yesterday in high spirits.

On Sept. 1, Nigel and Anna Kendall of Surrey, England, brought their 18-year-old daughter, Katherine to Omaha to seek the help of the only surgeon in the world they knew of who might be able to help their daughter — Arun-Angelo Patil, M.D., UNMC/NHS neurosurgeon.

Mini-medical school explores research in treating head, nose, throat diseases

UNMC and eight sites across Nebraska invite the public to attend UNMC Mini-Medical School, a free health educational series on four consecutive Thursdays beginning Oct. 3. The four-part series is titled, “What’s a-head: Exploring research advances of the head, neck, ear, nose and throat.”

The series will be Oct. 3, 10, 17 and 24, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. C.D.T., will be broadcast live from Omaha via satellite to: Columbus, Grand Island, Kearney, Lincoln, Norfolk, O’Neill, Red Cloud and Scottsbluff. Anyone with NebSat2 can downlink the series.

College of Dentistry holds white coat ceremony

The UNMC College of Dentistry recently held a White Coat Ceremony to welcome 45 new dental students and 20 dental hygiene students into the dental profession. The ceremony is a rite of passage, as well as a call to achieve the high standards set forth in the profession. See story for the names of this year’s new dental and dental hygiene students.

Nursing celebrates diversity with Hispanic Heritage Month event

More than 100 faculty, students and staff from the UNMC College of Nursing in Omaha, Lincoln, Kearney and Scottsbluff, took a trip over the noon hour to Latin America. In reality, participants celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month on campus, learning about Latin American culture.
