German student hones lab skills in U.S.

An overseas internship is helping Katrin Montzka of Aachen, Germany, fine-tune her research and English skills. Montzka, a student at the University of Applied Sciences of Aachen in Juelich, Germany, has been working in the UNMC laboratory of Claudia Kappen, Ph.D., since September 2004. She will return to Germany at the end of February.

UNMC employee helps children with hair loss

Sitting in the salon chair, Cara Mouw slid the dark brown braid – all 14.5 inches of it — into a plastic bag and later a padded envelope for its cross country trip to Florida.

Mouw, an administrative technician in the Dean’s Office at the UNMC College of Nursing, cut her below waist-length hair after Christmas and donated it to Locks of Love, a not-for-profit organization that provides custom-fitted hairpieces made entirely from donated human hair to financially disadvantaged children 18 and under with medical hair loss.

Ken Morehead was so moved by the nursing care he received at UNMC years ago that he donated $1.75 million toward nursing care to the UNMC College of Nursing. Last week, the UNMC College of Nursing celebrated the opening of the Morehead Center for Nursing Practice, which will benefit people across the state.

The Heartland Conference for Free Enterprise at the Cornhusker Convention Center in Lincoln, will focus on how to empower small business growth and success; technology transfer and intellectual property licensing; and new venture creation and expansion.
