Heart Walk is Saturday, May 1

The 2004 Omaha-Metro American Heart Walk is set for Saturday, May 1, at Chalco Hills Recreation area around Wehrspann Lake. Approximately 2,000 people are expected to participate in the ninth annual event. Employees still may sign up for the event.

UNMC appoints Wrobel as chief compliance officer

Sheila Wrobel, privacy officer for The Nebraska Medical Center, has been appointed chief compliance officer for the University of Nebraska Medical Center, a new position created by Rubens Pamies, M.D., UNMC vice chancellor for academic affairs and dean of graduate studies. The appointment was effective Jan. 12.

Chancellor outlines goals during annual address to faculty

A university-wide mentoring program for students. Each of UNMC’s colleges ranking in the top-half of NIH research funding. Students learning in a new health sciences education building. Researchers working in a second Durham Research Center tower. These five-year “stretch goals” were among several that UNMC Chancellor Harold M. Maurer, M.D., presented during his campus address at the Annual Faculty Meeting on Tuesday.

Advanced cancer, palliative care treatment guidelines released

In recognition of Cancer Awareness Month, the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) in collaboration with the American Cancer Society has released the Advanced Cancer and Palliative Care Treatment Guidelines for Patients, the latest in a groundbreaking series for individuals and their caregivers.
The Advanced Cancer and Palliative Care Treatment Guidelines help patients and physicians understand and respond to the range of medical, psychological, and social issues they may be facing.

2003 Databook on Nebraska Health now available

In 2003 the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services designated over 90 percent of Nebraska’s counties (88 of 93) as Mental Health Professional Shortage Areas (MHPSAs). Based on 2000 census data (Nebraska = 1,045,809), the population within these shortage areas exceeds 61 percent of the state’s total population. One facility, the Hastings Regional Center, has also been designated as an MHPSA.
