Caring attitude makes Dr. Lahue special

Bob Lahue, Ph.D., makes people feel comfortable. It starts with his name – he prefers Bob, not Robert – and extends to all he does as a cancer researcher and teacher of graduate students at UNMC’s Eppley Institute for Research in Cancer and Allied Diseases. Dr. Lahue is one of four faculty members being honored with the UNMC Outstanding Teaching Award at the Annual Faculty Meeting on Tuesday, April 20. This is the second in a series of profiles on the award recipients.

Dr. Cornish welcomes students by name

On the first day of class, professors rarely welcome first-year medical students into their classrooms by name — unless that professor is Kurtis Cornish, Ph.D. The UNMC associate professor of physiology and biophysics is known for knowing the names of his students, all 120 or so, when they walk into his Function of the Human Body course each January. Dr. Cornish is one of four faculty members being honored with the UNMC Outstanding Teaching Award at the Annual Faculty Meeting on Tuesday, April 20. The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society has chosen Christine Eischen, Ph.D., to receive a prestigious 5-year, $500,000 scholar award. The award was based on Dr. Eischen’s contributions and dedication to the field of lymphoma research.

Rural training residency program fulfils goals

John Mazour, M.D., is one of the first two physicians who completed the rural training residency program started by UNMC in 1990. Here, you’ll meet the rural physician in Albion, Neb., who not only takes care of the usual coughs and colds, but also delivers babies, is the attending emergency room physician and the medical director of several area nursing homes.
