Forums announced for College of Medicine dean candidates

Faculty, staff and students are invited to attend a series of forums scheduled for UNMC’s College of Medicine dean candidates. The first “Ask the Candidate” forum will be Thursday from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. in the College of Nursing, Room 2017. See article for details.

UNMC to participate in Nebraska Multicultural Expo

UNMC has a wonderful opportunity to showcase its programs and people at next month’s Nebraska Multicultural Expo. The expo, which will take place Oct. 4-5 at the new Qwest Convention Center and Arena in downtown Omaha, will feature exhibits related to health, education, business and finance. UNMC has agreed to anchor the health category. See story for details on how to participate in the expo.

Slow speeds, common courtesy key to parking garage safety

Tina Spencer has a couple of words of advice for those employees parking in the new employee parking structure: Drive slow.

At least one accident has been reported in the new structure, and several employees have reported that some drivers are traveling too fast in the structure. Speeds shouldn’t reach more than 5 mph in the structure, said Spencer, manager of Parking and Cashiering Services.

Employees can impact UNMC’s energy consumption by turning off lights, computers and monitors in offices, whenever possible, said Nick Combs, UNMC’s manager of Maintenance and Utilities.

A new position in UNMC’s Intellectual Property Office will further help retain intellectual property rights for the university and its researchers. Michael Dixon, who recently earned his Ph.D. in pathology and microbiology from UNMC, will serve as the IPO’s Faculty Liaison.

A fund to advance cancer research and care at the UNMC Eppley Cancer Center has been established in honor of Liz Karnes, an Omaha community leader who died earlier this year after a 12-year battle with cancer.
