After all she did to help him on a recent high-priority project, Tara Witte of the print shop deserved “some kind of ‘U,'” said Ron Schaefer, director of facilities, planning and construction.

In his letter to Witte’s supervisors, Schaefer said, “She is skilled and tasteful in layout work, knows the new graphic standards well and does super research work.”

Witte’s supervisors heeded Schaefer’s advice and nominated the graphic designer for the Chancellor’s Gold ‘U’ Award, an honor which was bestowed on Witte for the month of March.

Below we get to know more about the latest Gold ‘U’ recipient.

Describe your job in layman’s terms.

My job here at UNMC is to take a message that my customer wants to convey and then use the elements of design and the UNMC brand to communicate that message in a way that informs, persuades, organizes, stimulates, locates, identifies and attracts attention. So basically, in a nut-shell, I like to make my customers and basically anything they print look good. I take great pride in my work and in showing off the outstanding institution that is the University of Nebraska Medical Center.

What is your best on-the-job memory?

Receiving this award definitely tops the list. I was humbled and honored to receive such a recognition for “just me doing my job.” I enjoyed having breakfast with Chancellor Maurer and my nominators, along with attending the Board of Regents meeting. It was definitely a warm, fuzzy feeling to think that I am actually contributing to something bigger.

What is the best part of your job?

The best part of my job is that I absolutely love what I do. My dad tells me all the time that I am lucky to be making a career out something that I love. Even on the stressful days, I can’t imagine being anywhere else, working with other people or doing a different job.
