Event explores learning environment in biomedical education

The UNMC Department of Genetics, Cell Biology and Anatomy will host a symposium on “Transforming the Learning Environment in Biomedical Education” on May 30 in the Truhlsen Events Center inside the Sorrell Center on the UNMC Omaha campus.

UNMC Chancellor Jeffrey P. Gold, M.D., will open the daylong event, with featured speakers and topics that include:

  • Mike Pascoe, Ph.D., assistant professor in the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus Physical Therapy Program, on:
    • “Wiki Use in Healthcare Professions Education: Crowdsourcing Constructivism”
  • Michael Hortsch, Ph.D., professor in the University of Michigan College of Medicine Department of Learning Health Sciences, on:
    • “Brave New E-World! The Promises and Pitfalls of Electronic Learning Strategies”
  • Claudia Krebs, M.D., Ph.D., professor in the University of British Columbia Life Sciences Center Department of Cellular and Physiological Sciences, on:
    • “How the Integration of Emerging Technologies Can Truly Extend and Augment Learning Experiences!”
  • Victoria Prince, Ph.D., dean for graduate affairs at the University of Chicago Biological Sciences Division, on:
    • “Training Biomedical Science PhDs for Tomorrow”
  • Gundula Bosch, Ph.D., director of the R3 Graduate Science Program and Johns Hopkins School of Public Health R3 Center for Innovation in Science Education, Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, on:
    • “Teaching Critical Thinking and Good Investigative Practice Across the Science Disciplines: The R3 Graduate Science Program at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health”
  • Barbara Schaal, Ph.D., dean of the faculty of arts and sciences, Washington University, St. Louis, on:
