International events prompt cybersecurity concerns

At the medical center, safety is the No. 1 priority, which includes keeping its systems protected against cybercriminals.

The Department of Homeland Security is warning that U.S. organizations could face cyberthreats stemming from the current military action in Ukraine. The American Hospital Association is warning health care organizations specifically about cyberthreats.

While the Nebraska Medicine and UNMC Information Technology Services team is regularly engaged in cybersecurity best practices, the team takes these specific warnings very seriously.

Other updates to Information Security

The IT/Information Security teams are continuing to work with vendors and partners to ensure the med center's tools are protecting systems to the highest level. As the situation unfolds, there may be additional protections enabled to protect UNMC and Nebraska Medicine.

Everyone has an important part to play in keeping information safe. Please take a moment to review these resources and reminders to avoid being a victim of identity theft or other cybercrimes.

Ways to spot a suspicious email

  • Inconsistencies in email addresses, links and domain names.
  • Suspicious attachments, such as unexpected invoices and PDFs.
  • Emails that say they’ve noticed some suspicious activity or log-in attempts and ask you to confirm personal information, log ins, passwords, etc.
  • Links to an external website requesting credentials.
  • Overall, offers that sound too good to be true.

What to do if you receive a suspicious email

Colleagues should use the "Report Phish" button at the top right of the Outlook mailbox to report any possible phishing emails. This will help keep UNMC and Nebraska Medicine secure, because the information security team can analyze and investigate reported phishing emails. See more information about how to "Report Phish" and examples of phishing emails. You will need to be logged in to our network to view that webpage. For any further questions or concerns, please contact the Information Security Office.
