New faculty spotlight: Ryan Jorgenson, MD

Ryan Jorgenson, MD, is a new faculty member at UNMC.

  • Name: Ryan Jorgenson, MD
  • Hometown: Brookings, South Dakota
  • Title and department at UNMC: Instructor and advanced emergency medicine ultrasonography fellow in the UNMC Department of Emergency Medicine

Research/professional interests: Point of care ultrasound use in the emergency department, as well as resident/medical student education of POCUS use.

How I fell in love with emergency medicine: My interest in emergency medicine began in the early clinical years of medical school when presented with an undifferentiated patient, especially when the patient was unstable. The benefit of point-of-care ultrasound to better inform decisions in unstable patients during residency then led me down the path of pursuing an advanced emergency medicine ultrasound fellowship.

Education:

  • MD, University of South Dakota Sanford School of Medicine

Memberships:

  • American College of Emergency Physicians
  • American Board of Emergency Medicine

Three things people may not know about me:

  • I competed as a long and triple jumper at South Dakota State in college (though I mostly just kept the training room staff busy).
  • My route to medical school included a math major.
  • One of my non-medical interests is mechanical and automatic watches.
