On Sunday, Jan. 4, Jeffrey P. Gold, MD, president of the University of Nebraska, and H. Dele Davies, MD, interim chancellor of UNMC sent the following message to UNMC faculty, staff and students to provide an update on Nebraska Medicine governance.
As you have most likely heard, the University of Nebraska Board of Regents will hold a special meeting on Friday, Jan. 9, to consider a sole-member governance of Nebraska Medicine, the longstanding primary clinical partner of UNMC.
Nebraska Medicine has been governed by a dual-member structure between the University of Nebraska Board of Regents and Clarkson Regional Health Services (CRHS) since its inception, which grew out of a strong and productive partnership dating from the 1950s. When CRHS began to consider resigning its position in Nebraska Medicine, it approached the Board of Regents to see if the University of Nebraska would be interested in sole-member governance.
This is a tremendous opportunity for the University of Nebraska Medical Center. Shifting to a new structure aligns us with many of our peer institutions, including those in the Big Ten, and allows us to continue and build upon our mission of providing world-class medical care across Nebraska and beyond.
Since news of the upcoming Board meeting was announced this past Friday, many of you have had questions about what this change might mean for our institutions, our employees, our students and our patients. You can find answers to many of the most-asked questions here. In addition, we will also host an all-campus forum for faculty, staff and students on Tuesday. The forum will begin at noon in the Truhlsen Events Center, and more information about Zoom availability will be in Monday’s UNMC Today.
