UNMC to host America 250 event on June 30

Interim Chancellor H. Dele Davies, MD

The UNMC community will mark America’s 250 years of independence on June 30 with a reception and a spotlight on McGoogan Health Science Library’s new historical exhibit.

Faculty, staff and students are invited to join UNMC Interim Chancellor H. Dele Davies, MD, for cookies and refreshments from 2 to 4 p.m. in the Dr. Leland and Dorothy Olson Atrium, on the fourth floor of the Wigton Heritage Center in Omaha.

Celebratory events also will be scheduled for UNMC campuses in Kearney, Lincoln, Norfolk and Scottsbluff. Details will be provided by leaders at each campus.

In Omaha, Dr. Davies will make brief remarks at 2:15 p.m., and attendees can tour a new McGoogan Library exhibit titled “From Colony to Country: Medicine in America’s Founding Era.” The new exhibit, which will run through September 2027, examines different topics related to health, illness and healthcare during the colonial period, the Revolutionary War and the early American republic.

The exhibit, located on level 8 of the library and available online, will explore how “heroic” medical practices dominated the era, characterized by harsh, often poisonous medications and a reliance on bloodletting. It also will highlight the health difficulties of the colonies’ last monarch King George III and the country’s first president, George Washington.
