June 12 celebration marks successful HIPAA implementation

NHS, UNMC & UMA will host a celebration on Thursday, June 12, to recognize employees for the successful implementation of HIPAA. Ice cream sandwiches will be served at the celebration, which will take place from 1-4 p.m. in the courtyard between Swanson Hall and the visitor parking structure.

“We would like to thank everyone for their hard work in implementing the new HIPAA regulations,” said Sharon Welna, associate director for information systems compliance and project planning in UNMC Information Technology Services.

Welna said that 12,500 members of the workforce across the campus completed HIPAA training. More than 25 policies and procedures were created or modified in each organization to comply with this new federal privacy legislation.

“The impact of HIPAA is far-reaching, and its application to the health care environment will continue to evolve as the government provides more guidance on it,” Welna said.

Ice cream sandwiches will be served in the c-store for third-shift employees, and arrangements are being made for off site locations to receive their treats. All NHS, UNMC & UMA employees are invited to participate in the event.
