Third Annual Omaha Cycling Weekend June 21-22

The Third Annual NHS/UNMC Omaha Cycling Weekend will be held Saturday and Sunday, June 21-22. The weekend will feature two competitive cycling events in the Omaha metro area. The events will benefit the University of Nebraska Foundation’s Dave Babcook Memorial Fund for pancreatic cancer research.

Volunteers are needed for both days. They will work in four-hour shifts, from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. and from 1-5 p.m. Those interested may contact NHS clinical perfusionist Marco Vasquez at MVasquez@nhsnet.org

Volunteers are needed for 4 hours shifts: 9:00 -1:00 and 1:00-5:00 both Saturday June 21st and Sunday June 22nd.† Interested parties may contact Marco Vasquez through e-mail at MVasquez@nhsnet.org.

More than $6,000 in cash and prizes will be awarded over the two days of racing, which starts on Saturday, June 21, with the Hanscom Park Criterium. Hanscom Park is located at 32nd Avenue and West Center Street near downtown Omaha. There will be 10 races for men, women, boys and girls ages 15 and older, and children ages 3-14. The course at Hanscom Park is a .7-mile loop, which features some twisty, technical sections and some undulations through the back half. The day will begin at 8:30 a.m. with the Junior Girls (15-18) race and conclude at 3:45 p.m. with the start of the Pro Category 1 & 2 Men.

The Omaha Cycling Weekend concludes on Sunday, June 22, with the Dave Babcook Memorial Circuit Race at Elmwood Park, located near the University of Nebraska at Omaha campus. Once again, 10 races will be offered, including kids races, which will follow the same schedule as Saturday. The circuit at Elmwood Park is a 1.5-mile counter-clockwise loop with a gradual backstretch climb and brief, but technical, descent into a flat finish.

In addition to the prizes and awards offered for the individual events, there will be an Omnium Competition for the Pro Category 1 & 2 Men’s field. This competition is based on a points system where riders earn points for finish place, as well as primes. A prime is a one-lap race for a prize, cash or in this case, point(s). The Omaha Cycling Weekend Omnium will award a total of $500 to the top three finishers in the points competition.

Registration is available on race day for both events. However, a discount will be given to those that pre-register at www.active.com for both events. The kids races are free.

The 2003 NHS/UNMC Omaha Cycling Weekend is hosted by Team Kaos Cycling and the Husker Road Club.
