Below is a list of achievements, activities and happenings involving UNMC staff, faculty and students.

Gary Beck, Ph.D., has been named director of the Curriculum and Educational Research Office (CERO) in the College of Medicine. The appointment was effective Feb. 1. The CERO promotes and improves medical student education and educational scholarship in the College of Medicine and UNMC. Dr. Beck replaces Hugh Stoddard, Ph.D., who took a position at Emory University.

Students and faculty of the SHARING Clinic recently presented at a conference, Best Run Practices in Student Run Free Clinics, in San Antonio, Texas. More than 300 students and faculty of student run free clinics attended, with representation from the United States, Canada and China.
Presentations were made by the following UNMC students:


  • Kari Echtenkamp and Laura Espejel on the benefits of using clinical laboratory science students to improve patient safety in student run free clinics;
  • Katie Lydiatt on the educational value of the SHARING clinic;
  • Chris Spencer, Erica Langnas and Brian Coburn on identifying health disparities and transportation barriers for SHARING clinic patients; and
  • Ying Guo and Brian Coburn presented on the benefits of a continuity of care program for patients and students.
