Below is a list of achievements, activities and happenings involving UNMC staff, faculty and students.

John Sparks, M.D., professor and Stokes-Shackleford Chair of pediatrics, was elected to the board of directors of the Association of Medical School Pediatric Department Chairs. The purpose of the AMSPDC is to foster education and research in the field of child health and human development. Membership of AMSPDC consists of the chair or acting chair or academic administrative head of the department of pediatrics of each accredited medical school in the United States and Canada.

Two UNMC College of Public Health faculty members presented this week at an international medical conference in Sulaymani, Kurdistan, Iraq. Shawn Gibbs, Ph.D., associate dean for student affairs, gave an introduction to exposure assessment for environmental issues, and Monirul Islam, Ph.D., assistant professor of epidemiology, lectured on the epidemiology of multi-drug resistant tuberculosis. The conference is the Third Annual Joint International Conference and State-of-the-Art Surgical and Medical Symposium, sponsored by the College of Surgeons, Operation Hope, World Surgical Foundation and the Americas Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association.

The College of Medicine AOA Spring Convocation and Faculty Honors Convocation will be held from noon to 1 p.m. Thursday, March 21, at the Eppley Science Hall Amphitheater. Lunch will be provided beginning at 11:45 a.m. Samuel G. Benson, M.D., College of Medicine Alumnus and Chief Executive Officer/President, Registry of Physician Specialists, will present the AOA lecture entitled “When War Comes Home,” followed by the Faculty Honors presentations.

Denise Craft, owner of Craft Lifestyle Management, will speak on “Downsizing: Get a Move On!” from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 19, at the EngAge Wellness Multi-Purpose Room at The Home Instead Center for Successful Aging at 38th Avenue and Leavenworth Street.
