This article is the third in a series of four highlighting employees who support I’m Proud To Play A Part, the employee contribution initiative benefiting the Ambulatory Care Center and Cancer Center Campus.

She came to the med center by happenstance.

Margaret Boyce was a teacher turned stay-at-home-mom who was ready to reenter the workforce but also ready to try something new. A temp agency placed her at UNMC, in the human resources department.

All-Employee Celebration and Photo

All employees are invited to gather at 10 a.m. Friday at the Durham Outpatient Center West Atrium for a short celebration, refreshments and an all-employee photo.

Six months into temping, Margaret realized she wasn’t interested in going anywhere other than the med center. That gut feeling you sometimes get when things seem right, when they seem to fit? She had that.

“I understood UNMC’s mission and saw the growth potential,” she says. “I wanted to be part of something vital and something that is moving forward.”

Hear Margaret’s story.

That was six years ago. Today, Margaret continues to work in the HR department – now as an employee relations specialist. She handles employee relations in the College of Medicine and the business and finance unit.

It’s a behind-the-scenes role, but it’s an important role, she says. “We’re supporting the people who support the patients. What we do every day here at UNMC affects the lives of so many people in a really good way, and I’m proud to play a role in that.”

That’s a fitting statement for Margaret, who joins employees from UNMC, The Nebraska Medical Center, UNMC Physicians and Bellevue Medical Center in the I’m Proud To Play A Part initiative.

“We’re ambassadors,” she says of herself and her colleagues. “And this will send the message that we love working here and we’re excited about growing and we’re excited about the future.”

These ambassadors are also parents, siblings, relatives, friends – and if someone they know seeks medical treatment, they’re in the position, and pleased to be in the position, to help.

When Margaret’s uncle was diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer, she recommended treatment at UNMC. She knows the good work that happens here – now her uncle does, too.

The new facilities will further elevate patient care, she says. “These patients are already going through a lot and if there’s something we can do to make it easier for them, we should do it.

“Nebraska, the country – they need us. We’re a really good resource right now and if we keep moving in a positive direction, we’ll continue to be that resource. That’s something to be proud of.”
