UNMC's Amy Lamer (far left) and her family at the Missouri Valley Tournament.

It’s tournament time, and UNMC Today spoke to members of the UNMC community with basketball connections – even if they were tenuous ones – to ask who they were picking to take the title in Indianapolis this year.

The responses:

Paul Sorgen, Ph. D. – associate professor, biochemistry and molecular biology department:
Pick: Florida
“I attended UF for nine years and bleed orange and blue.”
Dr. Sorgen officiates local high school basketball games.

William Chaney, Ph.D. – professor, biochemistry and molecular biology department and Eppley Institute:
Pick: Michigan State
“Go Green! Go White! I pick them every year, since I got my Ph.D. from there.”
Dr. Chaney “chose science over the NBA.”

Mary Helms, associate director and associate professor in the McGoogan Library of Medicine
Pick: Villanova
“I will be at the Sprint Center in Kansas City this weekend for the tourney, but will be receiving text updates from friends on the CU game! Love March Madness.”
Helms is a self-described men’s college basketball junkie.

Pamela Carmines, Ph.D., FAHA, FASN – professor and vice chair for graduate education, department of cellular and integrative physiology:
Pick: Indiana
“I’m an IU alum (and rabid fan), so I cannot possibly predict a different winner.”
Dr. Carmines was a four-year letter winner as shortest player in her district in high school.

Amy Lamer, business services coordinator, finance and business services:

Head pick: Indiana
Heart pick: Creighton
“I would love to see Creighton win the championship. (Jesuit university, new Jesuit Pope. Coincidence? Maybe not.)”
Lamer is “obsessed” with Creighton basketball.

Nikki Hackendahl – marketing specialist, Munroe-Meyer Institute:

Pick: None
“I would choose a team based on the awesomeness of their uniform colors.”
Hackendahl once scored a basket for the other team in middle school.

I'm with Amy Lamer. Rooting hard for those Bluejays — my alma mater — but knowing that the odds of them cutting down the nets is like a Democrat winning in Nebraska. I've got Miami going all the way. Ugh!

  2. Larry Walker says:

    Louisville………….

  3. Agnes Constantino says:

I'm rooting for Creighton but my bracket says Michigan State. With some upsets yesterday, I'm at 12/16. let's see what happens today!

  4. Mike Berney says:

Duke and North Carolina in the final, with Duke winning.

  5. Kristin Watkins says:

I'm with Nikki. I have never scored a basket in a real game, but once won a round of "HORSE"

  6. Nick Bender says:

Miami, Gonzaga, Kansas, & Louisville in the Final Four. Miami vs Louisville in the final
    Louisville wins it all.

  7. Heidi Kaschke says:

I have Duke and Miami in the championship game with Duke winning. Go Blue Devils!

  8. John A Benson, Jr says:

The Oregon Ducks under Dana Altman of Creighton fame must get by Louisville, then watch out weaker bracket!
