Acclaimed orthopaedic surgeon to present on campus this week

Charles Rockwood Jr., M.D., an internationally acclaimed orthopaedic surgeon, will discuss shoulder conditions at two scientific presentations this week on the UNMC campus.

Dr. Rockwood, professor and chairman emeritus of the department of orthopaedic surgery at the University of Texas Health Science Center, will be the final speaker at two mornings’ full of presentations on Friday, June 27, and Saturday, June 28, at the Eppley Science Hall Amphitheater. The presentations are part of the Nebraska Resident Graduation and Alumni Meeting.

“The department of orthopaedic surgery and rehabilitation is honored to have one of the greatest orthopaedic contributors of all time visit us,” said Kevin Garvin, M.D., chairman of the department of orthopaedic surgery and rehabilitation at UNMC.

This weekend will mark the end of the five-year orthopaedic surgery residency program for four residents: Joshua Urban, M.D., John Sojka, M.D., Jason Browdy, M.D., and Kristoffer Breien, M.D. The Creighton/Nebraska Health Foundation Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Program is a joint program between UNMC and Creighton University. Kevin Garvin, M.D., chairman of the department of orthopaedic surgery and rehabilitation at UNMC, directs the residency program. A graduation ceremony honoring the four residents will take place Saturday evening.




Dr. Rockwood’s academic honors include a fellowship in shoulder surgery with. Charles S. Neer II, M.D., who pioneered shoulder prostheses, and an honorary fellowship from the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh, Scotland. He has served as president of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and as president of the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons. He is currently a member of the Board of Trustees for the Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation.

Dr. Rockwood’s June 27 presentation, titled “Shoulder Arthroplasty and Glenohumeral Arthritis,” will begin at 10:35 a.m. His June 28 presentation, titled “Rotator Cuff Arthropathy,” will begin at 11 a.m. All presentations on both days will take place in the Eppley Science Hall Amphitheater.
Dr. Garvin will open both days with introductions at 8 a.m.
