LiveGreen: Earth Week activities set

UNMC, The Nebraska Medical Center and UNMC Physicians will mark Earth Week, April 15 to 19, with a variety of activities.

The hospital’s Energy Advocate Team and UNMC LiveGreen worked together to plan a variety of ways to be involved in Earth Week activities and launched a new website, CampusEarthWeek.com, where detailed information, education and resources are available.

Monday April 15
Event: Earth Week kickoff/tree-planting ceremony
11:30 a.m. to noon
41st and Harney, near parking lot 5
The planting of a tree and a short ceremony will kick off Earth Week. Black Oak seedlings grown from acorns found at Rosenblatt Stadium will be given to the first 20 people in attendance at the tree planting ceremony.

Tuesday, April 16
Event: Lunch and Learn: Sustainable landscaping for your home
Noon to 1 p.m.
Durham Research Center Auditorium, first floor

Education: Proper disposal of expired/unused pharmaceuticals

Visit CampusEarthWeek.com to learn about proper disposal of waste pharmaceuticals to prevent drug abuse and harm to the environment.

Thursday, April 18
Event: Eyeglasses and alkaline battery collection
9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Drop off gently used eyeglasses and used non-rechargeable AA, AAA, C, D, and 9 volt alkaline batteries for recycling:

  • During Culture Fest at the Sorrell Center for Health Science Education, 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
  • East Campus Corporate Pavilion, 2nd floor break room, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Clarkson Tower, main entrance, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Nebraska Cafe, main entrance, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Durham Research Center, near room 1007, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Friday, April 19
Event: Household electronics recycling and household confidential paper shredding event
7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The Recovery Room Bar & Grill, 4016 Leavenworth St., west parking lot
Bring old household electronic equipment and old confidential papers that need to be shredded to this event. There is a small fee associated with each electronic item. Receive a reusable shopping bag for turning in an item. For information about recycling and fees please visit CampusEarthWeek.com.
