Three trainees in the Department of Cellular and Integrative Physiology received notification from the American Heart Association (AHA) Midwest Affiliate of $245,700 in grants being funded.
- Adam Case, Ph.D., postdoctoral fellow in the lab of Matthew Zimmerman, Ph.D., received a postdoctoral fellowship to investigate the role of mitochondrial-produced superoxide in T-lymphocyte activation and how this contributes to the pathogenesis of Angiotensin II-dependent hypertension.
- Jinu Kim, Ph.D., postdoctoral fellow in the lab of Babu Padanilam, Ph.D., received a postdoctoral fellowship to study the protective mechanism by which specific EET regioisomers prevent fibrogenesis and inflammation in chronic kidney disease.
- Peter Pellegrino, a student in the lab of Irving Zucker, M.D., received a predoctoral fellowship to learn novel information on a neuronal pathway that could be a target in sympathoexcitatory disease states.
These fellowship grants will allow the trainees to form critical collaborations with senior researchers, giving them the tools they need to compete for federal grant dollars.
Over the past five years, the AHA has supported $4 million of cardiovascular disease research in Nebraska, including $2.6 million at UNMC.
