UNMC, UNMC Physicians and The Nebraska Medical Center joined forces to participate in the 2013 Douglas County Relay for Life. Together the team raised $8,587 to support the American Cancer Society. The event, held June 8 at Elkhorn South High School, was the first opportunity for the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center to present as a major donor. Steve Caplan, Ph.D., an associate professor of biochemistry and molecular biology in the College of Medicine, is featured in the most recent issue of ASBMB Today, published by the American Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. The question-and-answer article, written by Rajendrani Mukhopadhyay, discusses Dr. Caplan’s career as a novelist and his military experience, as well as his research focus. Dr. Caplan’s third novel is slated for release at the end of this year, according to the article.

CityMatCH, the National Organization of Urban MCH Leaders housed within the department of pediatrics, has released the latest edition of its award-winning CityLights newsletter, which focuses on such diverse topics in maternal and child health as “The Changing Health Care Landscape,” “The Intersection of Community Leadership, Justice, and Health,” “Improving MCH in America,” “Adolescence and the Life Course,” “Achieving Health Equity in MCH Populations,” “Using the Principles of Complex Systems Thinking” and more.

The 2013 American Orthopaedic Association Austrian-Swiss-German (ASG) Traveling Fellows were in Omaha this week as part of a monthlong expedition, visiting 11 orthopaedic departments across the U.S. and Canada. The fellows spent time in the department of orthopaedic surgery and rehabilitation observing clinics and surgeries, but also took in a College World Series game. The fellows presented during Monday’s grand rounds.
