After 24 years of serving at UNMC, Mary McNamee, Ph.D., assistant vice chancellor for academic affairs recruitment and student engagement and associate professor of nursing, will retire at the end of June.
She arrived at UNMC in 1989 as assistant professor and assistant dean of the College of Nursing. She discovered a love of working with students and has been actively recruiting students for UNMC since 2000, when she became director of the office of student equity and multicultural affairs. She was named to her present position in 2004.
A staunch supporter of diversity, Dr. McNamee was principal investigator or co-investigator on several grants that funded medical education programs at UNMC for graduate and undergraduate students from underrepresented areas. The Summer Medical and Dental Education Program and the Summer Undergraduate Research Program exposed disadvantaged and rural students from across the U.S. to basic science.
She also has worked to help disadvantaged graduate students obtain funding for research and has been known to help foreign students furnish their apartments.
A retirement tea will be held in her honor on Wednesday, June 26, from 1 to 3 p.m. in the student lounge on the second floor of the Student Life Center.

Dr. Mary McNamee has been a strong advocate and supporter of the Virginia-Nebraska Alliance. She will truly be missed. She has established a strong relationship with the Virginia HBCU's and the UNMC system. The folks in Virginia say "thank you".
