Forums announced for College of Medicine dean candidates

Faculty, staff and students are invited to attend a series of forums scheduled for UNMC’s College of Medicine dean candidates. The “Ask the Candidate” forums will be from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. in the College of Nursing, Room 2017, on the following dates:

  • Thursday, Aug. 21 — John Gollan, M.D., Ph.D., chairman, department of internal medicine, UNMC;
  • Tuesday, Aug. 26 — Robert Marier, M.D., professor and acting dean, Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center School of Public Health, New Orleans, La.;
  • Tuesday, Sept. 23 — Bradford Schwartz, M.D., regional dean and professor of medicine and biochemistry, The University of Illinois College of Medicine at Urbana-Champaign, Urbana, Ill.; and
  • Thursday, Sept. 25 – Candidate to be announced at a later date.

Dr. Gollan, a native of Tasmania, graduated from medical school at Adelaide University in South Australia. He then acquired an M.D. from Adelaide and a Ph.D. in biochemistry from the University of London. He also received advanced clinical training in liver diseases at the Royal Free Hospital in London, before joining the faculty at the University of California, San Francisco in 1976.

He moved to Boston and the Harvard Medical School in 1981, where he established a program in liver diseases. He was appointed director of the division of gastroenterology and hepatology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and remained in this position for 10 years, until 1999.

At this time, he returned to his alma mater, Adelaide University, as the Mortlock Professor and head of the department of medicine, director of medicine at the Royal Adelaide Hospital and director of the Hanson Research Institute. In 2001, he returned to the United States as professor and chairman of the department of medicine at UNMC.

Dr. Gollan has been an active investigator, funded by the NIH, with a major research interest in hepatic metabolism. He has received numerous awards and honors, and is a member of the prestigious Association of American Physicians. He also has achieved leadership positions in a number of professional organizations, and has served as president of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases, and the International Association for the Study of the Liver.
