UNMC to participate in Nebraska Multicultural Expo

UNMC has a wonderful opportunity to showcase its programs and people at next month’s Nebraska Multicultural Expo.

The expo, which will take place Oct. 4-5 at the new Qwest Convention Center and Arena in downtown Omaha, will feature exhibits related to health, education, business and finance. UNMC has agreed to anchor the health category.

“This is the first consumer show in the new building and a prime opportunity for UNMC to take the lead in an outreach event,” said Valda Boyd Ford, director of Community and Multicultural Affairs, in UNMC’s Community Partnership. “We’d like to have dozens of booths that promote and showcase UNMC, its programs and its people.”

More than 20,000 people are expected to attend the expo, which will bring together diverse populations to share cultures, encourage cooperation, celebration and economic empowerment. Local, midwest and national vendors and exhibitors will be on hand for the two-day event, which also includes a car show.

“The expo is a great place to provide health screening and health education, answer questions about the need for greater participation in clinical trials, talk about potential employment opportunities and the numerous types of skills needed to work at an academic medical center, and demonstrate UNMC’s commitment to the community,” Ford said. “It also is an ideal service-learning project for student groups.”

Faculty, staff, students and/or departments interested in participating in the expo should contact Ford at 559-9660 or via e-mail at vford@unmc.edu by Sept. 5.
